i have a distinct impression that people who run tribe are either completely clueless and have no idea what they're doing, or they have completely different priorities.
i'm mostly referring to Darren of course, since Mark CLEARLY has other priorities, and Wendy (aka the TOU Gal) seems to be functioning just fine, under the circumstances.
anyway, i really don't want tribe to die, although i'm afraid it might be just a question of *when*, not *if* (it's going to croak).
(but of course, maybe Darren did a miracle this time, and i'm just being pessimistic, as usual. ::: zip it, Inna. ::: )
just sayin'.

Re: this may be evil of me, but....
Tue, July 22, 2008 - 8:52 PMis that 'tribe refugees' place still around? there was some talk of it for a while, i joined, there were posts, & then i haven't heard anything about it for a while.
of course, haven't really bothered to look either...
anyhow, um, shit, what was i saying? -

Re: this may be evil of me, but....
Tue, July 22, 2008 - 9:00 PMTalk on the gold star tribe is that the old database is pretty much shot, and Darren is building another one from pretty much scratch that will work better.
He's doing his best. What he sucks at, however, is communicating with anybody but the people who hang out on the gold star tribe, which, as it turns out, isn't the place to air complaint or dissent. He's also bad at follow-through on things like delivering what he promised subscribers. They were perhaps undeliverable (except the t shirts, which just haven't been gotten around to yet). Darren doesn't have the training to make the needed fixes, which he admits. But clarity and better communication sure would have been nice.

<<the gold star tribe, which, as it turns out, isn't the place to air complaint or dissent.>>
really?? how come?
(interesting. just today - for the first time ever, since this is against my, ahem, 'principles'.... i was seriously considering whipping out a credit card and paying sixty bucks just so i could join the gold tribe and fucking unload on Darren. i don't mean, to give him a hard time, i mean just to ask him some 'tough questions' and do my fair share of whining.
oh well. )

Re: this may be evil of me, but....
Tue, July 22, 2008 - 10:05 PMWell, people have been asking hard questions. And the general result is a pileon attack of the person doing the questioning, with a rousing chorus of "if you don't like it here, leave!" It's unfortunate, really. -

Re: this may be evil of me, but....
Tue, July 22, 2008 - 10:06 PMOh, also, you might get repeatedly unsubbed, which is generally what's been happening to Satan, largely for needing Darren about exactly these issues.

Re: this may be evil of me, but....
Tue, July 22, 2008 - 10:06 PMI give huge props to Darren. As the sole tech who's responsible for keeping the ball of mud that is tribe rolling along, he does not have an easy job, and I imagine the pay is way below market. He does well enough under the circumstances. -

ning is a strange beast. i haven't been there in ages; checked in today for the first time in many months and there doesn't seem to be happening much on there.
at least ning doesn't make me want to throw up (unlike myspace, facebook and Y360, pretty much).

Re: this may be evil of me, but....
Tue, July 22, 2008 - 9:05 PMHe was deleting old stuff, or something like that.
I don't know about how you keep your computer, but I have a tendency to keep stuffing things into folders, which are then stuffed into other folders.
I have a folder on my desktop titled "Junk" and it is. It's all the stuff that ends up on my desktop when I download something. Let's see what's in there.
There is a picture of a tandem bike made of wood. I don't know where it came from. There is also a picture of an art installation, also of wood, really cool, can't find the source, I just saved the image.
I have a pdf file of a passive solar home. I have a lot of home plans stashed, like from Rocio Romero. I have an image of an interior shot of commercial applications for Armstrong products. A residential one too.
There's some Victorian clip art. Another interior that is modern, concrete and glass. A jelly fish. A screen shot of the Google search page during "Earth Hour" when everyone was supposed to turn off their lights. The background was black.
there's a partial screen shot of a character from a game on Kongregate, that looks like George Bush and has an intelligence rating of zero. I'll post that in the photo gallery. The game is an adventure game titled "Caravaneer"
Anyway, if Darren had to sort through things like that, on a giant server, instead of a dinky home computer, he'll be busy for days.

Tue, July 22, 2008 - 9:11 PMLooks like we are back into the bug zone, where we will not be able to see any new posts unless we post a reply to an already existing post. I can only see the responses if I reply to Inna's message, but I cannot reply to any of the new replies. And no one will be able to READ the replies unless THEY reply to Inna's message.
I'll test a new post, but that may not show up for anyone.

from a very relevant thread:
uspolitics.tribe.net/thread/...5b45e294
Proof of concept (July 9th)
Beta test roll out (August 1st)
- so what the fuck happened today - Proof of concept or Beta test roll out?
inquiring minds want to know.
(Darren rocks and all that good stuff notwithstanding.) -

Re: just curiousss
Tue, July 22, 2008 - 11:01 PMNeither. It was clearing out old databases. Which is exactly what the "down for maintenance" page said, every single time I tried to load Tribe.
It's also discussed somewhere, in the Gold Star tribe, the Bugs tribe, and/or the Brainstorm tribe. I would normally provide links but the pages are not loading too well right now. -

Re: just curiousss
Tue, July 22, 2008 - 11:05 PMHere's the link:
tribes.tribe.net/goldstarc...885640b8ce
Text from Darren's message is:
"I've been deleting the unused entries in the database and getting the database trimmed down. I have been doing this very slowly during all hours of the day, it might be causing a little bit of slowness right now. I have been thinking about taking the site down and doing it all at once, full speed."
And the suggestion to take the site down was agreed to by several people. I agree too. Take it down, get it done.
It's a lot easier to work on a car when it's stationary. As it would be to work on this site. And then there would be complaints, but different ones. No one can tell if the site is being worked on, if it is slow. But everyone can tell the site is being worked on, if we get the maintenance page. -

Re: just unimpressed
Wed, July 23, 2008 - 1:18 AMwhen they sold the stars I'd of bought in if that had meant shares in the biz etc...
tribe is a great online chatty thing and the only thing that lets it down is people are generally not interesting...
and there aren't any attractive girls around...
that like toothless old guys...
with no revenue...
etc...
and nobody has sent me drugs or money thus far...
and whilst some very attractive tribe girls did come by whilst visiting europe...
they didn't insist on helping on the house and having my babies and looking after me in my old age...
frankly the whole experience is kinda disappointing... -

Re: just unimpressed
Wed, July 23, 2008 - 11:26 AMI heart Darren, I really do. I fully get it that he's the one exhausted guy keeping this whole mess afloat. I do not heart (why am I talking that way?) continuing lack of communication over what's going on, and the fact that certain things were promised to subscribers that haven't been delivered. I get it that they can't be delivered yet and the reason why, but it's just much better customer relations to address those things clearly, upfront, in a generally accessible way (as in, not the occasional post in an already overactive tribe), and in a regular and timely fashion. And I seriously don't dig the mass abuse on the star tribe of anybody who complains.
